$35.5 million in new grants aims to finish the job for species on the brink

Some endangered species do not need decades more of attention — they need one bottleneck removed. That is the idea behind the new National Species Recovery Grants programme from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and the US Fish and Wildlife Service: $35.5 million across 110 grants, plus $8.6 million in matching funds, aimed at species close enough to recovery that targeted work could move them toward downlisting or delisting. The projects span polar bears in Alaska, fish in Missouri, red-cockaded woodpeckers already rebounding, and a round-leaf birch found in a single Virginia county.

The upbeat factorrecovery is treated as a finish line some species can actually cross — with the last mile funded.
