39,328 Michigan students get movement breaks, better lunches and peer mental-health support
Sixty-eight Michigan schools, serving 39,328 students, have been chosen for the 2026–27 round of Building Healthy Communities: Step Up for School Wellness — a programme that lets each school build its own mix from 18 resources spanning nutrition, physical activity and mental health. Depending on what a school picks, its students might take movement breaks between lessons, join walk-and-run clubs, choose more nutrient-rich menu items, learn hands-on nutrition skills, or lead peer-to-peer mental-health awareness for classmates. The programme is run by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan with Wayne State University's Center for Health and Community Impact and the Michigan departments of health and education, and it has history: since 2009 it has reached 615,000 students in more than 1,400 Michigan schools.
