4.83 gigawatts in nine months: Italy's solar rooftops and fields keep multiplying
Italy's solar build-out is quietly compounding. In the first nine months of 2026 the country connected 4.834 gigawatts of new solar capacity across 147,632 systems — including 1.74 gigawatts in the third quarter alone, up 37% on the same period last year — taking its total to 2,314,113 connected systems and 48.347 gigawatts, according to ITALIA SOLARE's analysis of Terna's Gaudì database. Utility-scale and business installations drove the growth. The batteries are keeping pace: Italy now has 984,829 storage systems totalling 19,983 megawatt-hours, just shy of the 20 gigawatt-hour mark — the pairing that lets sunshine collected at noon cook dinner at eight.
