60 votes to 2: Argentina's Senate writes the rulebook for carbon credits

Argentina's Senate has approved a national carbon market framework by 60 votes to 2, sending it to the lower house. Until now the country had no single rulebook for who owns a carbon credit, how it is registered, or how it can be sold abroad. The bill creates clear rules and a national registry for credits earned by projects that cut or remove greenhouse gases — forest conservation, reforestation and renewable energy among them — with safeguards against double counting and alignment with the Paris Agreement's Article 6. Industry estimates suggest a working framework could unlock between $1.4 billion and $3.9 billion a year in credit exports, paying Argentinians to protect the landscapes the world needs.

The upbeat factora forest left standing is about to have a payslip — clear rules turn conservation into income.
