7,141 students and counting: a small Alabama college just enrolled more people than ever before

Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, Alabama, has set a fall enrollment record for the fourth straight year — 7,141 students, up from 5,966 in fall 2022, a rise of nearly 20%. The college has been adding the things local students actually asked for: evening nursing classes, a new programme training speech-language pathology assistants — the only associate degree of its kind in Alabama — more dual-enrollment places for high-schoolers, and routes that turn workforce certificates into college credit. 'More students than ever are choosing Wallace State as the place to begin or advance their educational journey,' said President Vicki Karolewics.

The upbeat factora community college growing because it keeps listening to what its town needs next.
