A 112-megawatt solar plant is coming to Zambia's copper country — and its spare power is for the neighbours
Solarcentury Africa will build the 112-megawatt-peak Kusoka Solar Plant in Zambia's North-Western Province, in partnership with First Quantum Minerals. The plant will mainly power First Quantum's Trident operations — the Sentinel copper and Enterprise nickel mines — but it is being built on a merchant basis, meaning spare electricity can be sold to other organisations or into the Southern African Power Pool, the shared grid linking 12 countries. Istanbul-headquartered YEO will handle engineering and construction, and Solarcentury will own and run the plant.
The upbeat factoreven a copper mine's power plant can pull double duty — sunshine for industry, and spare light for a whole region's grid.
