A $690 million climate facility built for African governments, by African finance

African countries planning for a hotter century now have a fund designed for exactly that. The Africa Finance Corporation and the Green Climate Fund have launched the Africa Sovereign Climate Facility, with total financing of US$690 million — including $280 million from the GCF and a parallel commercial facility of up to $260 million led by AFC. The first phase reaches Angola, Benin, Côte d'Ivoire and Nigeria, turning national climate plans into investable projects across clean energy, food and water security, health and climate-resilient infrastructure. The GCF estimates its share alone could reach about 4.5 million people and avoid some 3.4 million tonnes of emissions. 'The infrastructure we build today must both power Africa's growth and withstand the climate pressures of tomorrow,' said AFC president Samaila Zubairu at the signing.
