A cassowary walks into town: the day a giant rainforest bird shut down Innisfail's main street

Innisfail, in far north Queensland, came to a gentle standstill when a cassowary — a tall, helmeted rainforest bird with a brilliant blue neck — wandered down the main street and settled in for a look around. Traffic stopped, shoppers gave it room, and wildlife handlers eventually guided the prehistoric-looking visitor safely back toward the bush. No one was hurt and the bird was unharmed; mostly, the town got a story it will tell for years, and a reminder that in this corner of Australia, the rainforest still walks among its neighbours.
