A home of their own: Nicosia opens Cyprus's first residence for older people with mental-health conditions
In Latsia, Nicosia, a purpose-built home has opened for a group long stuck in hospital wards: older people with chronic mental-health conditions who are stable, well, and ready to live in the community again. The residence — the first of its kind in Cyprus, built from scratch — will welcome patients discharged from Atalassa Psychiatric Hospital, with specialist staff, a psychiatrist and a doctor on site, trees planted around the building, and furniture donated by Mental Health Association volunteers. Health Minister Michalis Damianos, who visited the opening, called the aim 'a humane and supportive environment for people with mental health problems to be rehabilitated in the community.'
