A kangaroo 3 km out to sea swam up to a boat — and fell asleep in its rescuer's arms

Skipper Ryan Smith thought he saw something odd in Boston Bay, off Port Lincoln in South Australia. 'He's like, "I reckon there's a roo in the water," and we're like, "Yeah, sure,"' diver and farmer Jake Murray told ABC. They doubled back — and there it was: a young kangaroo, exhausted, about 3 kilometres (nearly 2 miles) from dry land. The crew lowered the boat's sea door to water level, and the roo swam straight to it. Murray got under its arms, lifted it aboard and cradled it, keeping its powerful legs still, until the worn-out animal dozed off in his arms. On board, Miguel Villarroel, a diver from Ecuador's Galapagos Islands, asked if this happened often — his first-ever kangaroo sighting was in the open sea. Back at the beach, the roo rested, then hopped away under its own power.
