A new key for a lock nobody knew existed
Zika's key enzyme had a pocket nobody knew about — until IRBM's chemists found it and built a molecule to fit. Their inhibitor shut down the virus's replication machinery in cells and animal models, with a clean safety profile. The same trick could work against dengue, yellow fever and West Nile. The findings appear in Nature Communications; no approved Zika antivirals exist today.
