A once-a-week shot could ease one of dialysis's cruellest complications
Many people on dialysis develop secondary hyperparathyroidism — overactive parathyroid glands that quietly damage bones and the heart. Pathalys Pharma presented its pivotal Phase 3 PATH-1 and PATH-2 results at Kidney Week: upacicalcet, a once-weekly intravenous treatment given during dialysis, met its main goal, cutting the hormone iPTH by at least 30% in significantly more patients than placebo. The data were published simultaneously in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. Principal investigator Jessica Kendrick of the University of Colorado presented the findings.
The upbeat factora treatment that fits into the dialysis session patients already endure — no extra trips, no extra pills.
