A podium everyone can speak from: Rockville's disability advisors test the council chamber's new design

Speaking at a public meeting should not depend on whether the podium fits your body. In Rockville, Maryland, the Mayor and Council chamber has a new accessible podium — and the people best qualified to judge it put it through its paces: the Disability Community Advisory Group of the city's ADA Compliance Program, including representatives of the blind and deaf communities. At their fall meeting the group tested the podium and gave it high marks for ease of use. It is a small piece of furniture with a large principle inside it: the room where decisions are made should be open to every resident who wants a say in them.

The upbeat factordemocracy, adjusted to reach — a podium tested and approved by the people it was built for.
