A quilt, a gallery walk, and a national prize: one small school brings women's service stories home

Students at Kangaroo Inn Area School in South Australia spent the year listening to the people history books often skim past. Working with veterans and a serving member of the Australian Defence Force, they researched women from their own region who had served, then turned what they learned into writing, artwork and a student-designed quilt, displayed in a gallery walk at the school. That project has now been named the national winner of the 2026 Anzac Day Schools' Awards, which recognise schools that bring students and the veteran community together. State and territory winners were named right across Australia, from primary classrooms to specialist schools. Next year's competition is already open, with a gentler theme — the 'Pursuit of peace', marking 80 years since Australia's first peace operation in 1947.

The upbeat factora small school stitched its neighbours' stories into a quilt — and the whole country took notice.
