Africa's first purpose-built wheeling settlement platform just went live at a 114 MW solar plant

South Africa's electricity market is learning a new trick: wheeling — a solar farm in one place selling its power to a business somewhere else, using the national grid as the road. The paperwork of who generated what, and who owes whom, is the hard part. At SunCentral 1, a 114 MW solar plant built by SolarAfrica, that settlement has just gone live on Energypro, a platform built by Open Access Energy and described as Africa's first purpose-built system for the job. SunCentral 1 is the first of three 114 MW plants in a planned 342 MW phase, on the way to a proposed 1 GW development — dependable software, SolarAfrica's Vincent Labuschagne says, is what lets a generator serve customers as more sites switch on.

The upbeat factorthe unglamorous software that lets sunshine generated in one place pay bills in another — now proven live.
