After 94 days, Kenya's public health officers are going back to work
For 94 days, Kenya's public health officers — the people who run disease surveillance, inspect food and water, and guard border points against outbreaks — were on strike. On Sunday they agreed to suspend it for 30 days and return to duty within 24 hours, after Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale brokered talks with their union, the KEHPHPU. Union secretary general Brown Ashira said concern over reported mpox cases and the urgent need to strengthen outbreak surveillance helped drive the decision. 'We are committed, and we love what we do,' union treasurer Mohammed Ali added. Negotiations on the officers' grievances continue — but the watch posts are staffed again.
