After a decade of campaigning, 12,000 koalas just got a national park of their own
It took ten years of campaigning, but the trees won. New South Wales' parliament has approved the Great Koala National Park — 476,000 hectares on the mid-north coast protecting more than 12,000 koalas, greater gliders and over 100 other threatened species. 'Good for the koalas and the trees they live in,' said Environment Minister Penny Sharpe. Conservation groups called it 'conservation at the scale nature needs' — an iconic park, secured now and for future generations.
The upbeat factora decade of persistence, repaid in 476,000 hectares of safe forest.
