An experimental Lilly drug helped people lose nearly twice the weight of today's best-known treatment in a Phase 3 trial

In an 80-week Phase 3 trial reported this week, Eli Lilly's experimental drug retatrutide helped participants lose 20 to 21 percent of their body weight — 44 to 47 pounds on average — compared with about 21 pounds for those taking Ozempic. It also lowered A1C, a key blood-sugar measure, by more than the comparison drug in adults with Type 2 diabetes. The most common side effects were stomach-related, as with this class of medicines. Lilly plans to seek regulatory approval in 2027, so this is promise, not a prescription — but it is a large, rigorous trial pointing at a step change.

The upbeat factora rigorous head-to-head trial suggests the next generation of weight and diabetes treatment may be markedly stronger.
