Assam's rhino guardians foiled nine poaching attempts — and not one rhino was lost
Assam's greater one-horned rhinos, centred on Kaziranga National Park, are a conservation treasure that organised poaching networks keep testing. This week Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reported that Operation Falcon — the state's intelligence-led anti-poaching drive — has foiled nine separate poaching attempts and led to 48 arrests, with zero rhinos lost to the attempts it stopped. 'Zero rhino poaching. Now that's a plot worth protecting,' Sarma wrote. The state says its next chapter, Project Rhino, is already under way, tightening surveillance and patrols around the parks where most of the world's one-horned rhinos live.
The upbeat factornine times, poachers came for the rhinos — and nine times, the people guarding them were already there.
