Auckland's volcanic underworld is in the running for world heritage status
Ngā Tapuwae o Mataoho — the Auckland Volcanic Field, the culturally significant landscape of cones and craters that shapes Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland — is one of nine New Zealand sites the Department of Conservation has nominated for UNESCO's World Heritage tentative list. In Māori tradition the field records the footprints of the atua Mataoho. New Zealand currently has just three World Heritage sites, and the road from tentative list to full inscription can take a decade of dossiers, protection plans and proof of community support — a long road, but the volcanoes are now officially on it.
The upbeat factora city built on volcanoes may one day stand on the same list as the Taj Mahal and the Pyramids — for the ground beneath its feet.
