Australia's battery boom outran a full year in six months: 7.1 GWh of big batteries switched on
Australia's energy transition just posted a half-year that beats whole years. The Clean Energy Council's first-half 2026 investment report counts nine utility-scale batteries entering operation with 2.3 GW of power and 7.1 GWh of storage, backed by A$4.3 billion (about $3 billion) of investment — more storage than the 5.1 GWh commissioned across all of 2025. Twelve new generation projects totalling 2.6 GW reached final investment decisions in the same six months, already exceeding the 2.3 GW decided across the whole of last year, led by solar and solar-plus-battery projects. Five generation projects totalling 1.4 GW also switched on, including the 756 MW first stage of Victoria's Golden Plains Wind Farm. Storage is what turns sunshine into evening power, and Australia is now building it at record pace.
