Bengaluru's IISc gains a new centre devoted to the machines of the energy transition

Turbines are the unsung machines of clean power — spinning in geothermal plants, biomass boilers and industrial heat systems. In Bengaluru, Triveni Turbines and the Indian Institute of Science have inaugurated a Centre of Excellence for high-efficiency, low-carbon turbomachinery, building on joint work that already produced CO2 heat-pump systems for industry. The centre will focus on decentralised, steam-based renewable machines up to 100 megawatts — the size that serves factories and towns rather than mega-grids — and endows a new chair, the Dhruv Manmohan Sawhney Turbomachinery Chair. The energy transition is usually told in solar panels; this is its engine room getting a research home.

The upbeat factorThe energy transition has an engine room now — and Bengaluru is staffing it.
