Blyvoor finally has a library of its own: learners no longer travel to find a place to study

For learners in Blyvoor, a community outside Carletonville in South Africa's Gauteng province, serious studying used to start with a trip — the books, reference material and quiet space were somewhere else. On October 23, Merafong City's Executive Mayor, Nozuko Best, officially opened Blyvoor Library, giving the community its own public library for the first time. Municipal leaders, educators, learners and residents gathered for an opening the city calls a milestone for literacy and lifelong learning: a place for reading, research and personal development that belongs to the neighbourhood itself. A library is among the oldest technologies for equality ever built — the same shelves, free, for the child of anyone. Blyvoor's learners still have every exam and assignment ahead of them; now the room where they prepare for them is finally in their own community.

The upbeat factorthe books came to the learners for once — a whole community's study room, opened at last.
