Breakfast in the classroom: 145 Massachusetts schools honoured for feeding 48,000 students
In Massachusetts, the school day increasingly starts with breakfast — in the classroom, where every child can reach it. The Eos Foundation has given its 2026 Healthy Start Awards to 145 schools that serve breakfast to at least 80% of their students, together enrolling 48,000 children; each school receives $500, over $70,000 in total. Serving breakfast in class, rather than in a cafeteria before the bell, can triple participation and twice as many students eat compared with before-the-bell models. 'Every student deserves to start the school day nourished, supported and ready to learn,' said Education Secretary Steve Zrike, as the state launched a new Strengthening School Breakfast Challenge alongside the awards.
