Bring your own bag, plant a tree: Bangladesh shoppers grow 1 lakh (100,000) trees across 42 districts

Aarong, working with BRAC and Mission Green Bangladesh, has planted more than 1 lakh (100,000) trees across 42 districts of Bangladesh — funded entirely by shoppers who stopped using paper bags. Between September 2025 and March 2026 the 'Bring Your Own Bag' campaign cut paper-bag use by 46.8 lakh (4.68 million) bags, saving roughly 6,000 trees, and the Tk2.9 crore (29 million taka, about $240,000) raised from bag sales went straight into planting. Through BRAC's Ultra-Poor Graduation programme, 95,382 fruit, timber and medicinal saplings reached 40,001 households in 210 sub-districts — trees meant to feed families, earn income and green the places people live. With Mission Green Bangladesh, the partners are also planting dense Miyawaki forests of native species.

The upbeat factora shopping habit became 100,000 trees — and fruit, shade and income for 40,000 households.
