Building blocks made of light: AI-designed protein scaffolds could carry mRNA medicines more gently

mRNA medicines — instructions delivered into cells to make a needed protein — need a courier, and the couriers in use can be harsh. A team at the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology in China has used AI to discover and engineer scaffolds built from human-derived proteins to do the carrying instead, reported in Nature Communications. Because the scaffolds start from proteins the human body already knows, the hope is delivery that cells tolerate better, designed with AI searching far more shapes than a human team could test by hand. The work is early and laboratory-stage — a better envelope, demonstrated in principle, not yet a medicine — but every mRNA therapy of the future depends on exactly this kind of delivery problem being solved.

The upbeat factorthe next generation of medicines may arrive in packaging the body recognises as its own.
