Dale has welded his boat for 38 years. At 86, strangers are helping him finally launch it

In Mineral Wells, Texas, there is a 62-foot steel boat in a front yard, where it has been taking shape since 1987. Dale, now 86, built it by hand — four staterooms, roughly 75% complete — with one destination in mind: Alaska. But finishing it alone is beyond him now, and a steep hill stands between the boat and the road, so moving it will take heavy machinery he doesn't have. Then three visitors from England — Laurence Benson, Benjie and Will — heard about the boat and knocked on his door. 'The second he started talking about the boat, you could see it,' Benson wrote. 'He's as passionate now as he was 40 years ago.' Dale climbed a ladder to show them the deck, something he hadn't done in years. The three started a fundraiser; within days, more than 1,500 donors had given over $41,000 toward the $45,000 needed to finish, move and launch her. A 38-year solo project now has a crew.

The upbeat factorthree strangers knocked, 1,500 more joined — and an 86-year-old's lifelong dream is back on schedule.
