England's biggest building projects must now leave nature at least 10% better off
From November 2, any nationally significant infrastructure project in England — new reservoirs, railways, roads and energy networks — must deliver at least a 10% net gain for biodiversity to win consent. Developers must file a biodiversity gain plan, and the habitats they create have to be legally secured, managed and monitored for at least 30 years. The rule turns wildlife from an afterthought into a design requirement for the country's biggest builds.
The upbeat factorevery major project now has to hand nature back more than it took.
