Farms on campus: Nigeria offers 40 universities ₦2 billion (about $1.3 million) each to grow food at scale

Nigeria is turning its universities into farms — serious ones. The federal government has set out an ₦80 billion (about $52 million) programme offering up to ₦2 billion (about $1.3 million) each to 40 public tertiary institutions across the country's six zones to build commercial farms on their underused land: mechanised crop production, livestock, aquaculture, processing and storage. The education and agriculture ministries and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund will supervise, and institutions were picked for existing agricultural faculties and viable land. The double purpose is the point: more home-grown food for the country, and students who graduate having actually run a farm business, not just studied one.

The upbeat factorlecture halls by day, working farms by design — food security taught the practical way, at national scale.
