Green finance you can touch: central bankers walk a Bangladeshi denim factory that runs cleaner
Policy talk about green finance can stay abstract — until you walk a factory floor. Bangladesh Bank and BRAC Bank brought central bankers from Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Nepal and Pakistan to NZ Denim, a factory whose renewable energy installations and energy-efficient machinery were paid for through green refinancing arranged by BRAC Bank. The visit closed a three-day South Asia financial inclusion programme run with the Alliance for Financial Inclusion, and its point was practical: show regulators from four neighbouring countries exactly how a sustainable-finance policy becomes solar panels on a roof and efficient machines on a line, and what the bank and the borrower each had to do to make it work. Bangladesh Bank chose the factory deliberately, as a working demonstration other countries in the region can copy.
