Health workers are walking door to door to protect 11 million children in Sudan from polio

Sudan's Federal Ministry of Health, working with the World Health Organization, UNICEF and partners, has launched a nationwide polio vaccination campaign aiming to reach around 11 million children with the novel oral polio vaccine in October and November. The first round alone targets 6 million children in 107 localities across 12 states, with a further 5 million to follow across the five Darfur states and West Kordofan. The drive aims to stop a variant poliovirus that began circulating in December 2024, in a country where conflict has left many families with limited access to health services. Health Minister Dr Heitham Mohammed Ibrahim praised the health workers and volunteers determined to 'reach every household', and called on communities to take up the chance to protect their children.

The upbeat factor11 million children, one vaccine, and health workers who refuse to let any household be missed.
