In dry Garissa, four water schemes begin a rebuild for 13,330 people

In Garissa County, in Kenya's dry northeast, four community water schemes are being rebuilt and expanded after their construction sites were formally handed over to the builders. The Ali Kune, Baraki, Medina and Shanta Abak schemes already serve about 13,330 people. The work brings stronger borehole pumps powered by solar panels, more than 26 kilometres (about 16 miles) of new pipelines, bigger water storage, and repaired water kiosks and livestock troughs — so households, schools and health facilities get steadier water even when the rains fail. Community elders and representatives of women and youth were part of the handover. The project sits inside a World Bank-financed programme strengthening groundwater across five dry Kenyan counties, where underground water is often the one supply that does not dry up.

The upbeat factorin a county where rain often fails, the water underground is being reached with solar power and shared more widely.
