In Mthatha, children walk into surgery wearing capes — and come out with new smiles

Over three days at Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha, Operation Smile South Africa's volunteer surgical teams set out to give 40 children free cleft lip and palate surgery their families could not otherwise have afforded. Before their operations, the children were dressed in little capes and presented with bravery medals. A dental team worked alongside the surgeons, strengthening oral healthcare in the community the mission leaves behind.

The upbeat factorforty children, forty new smiles — and capes for the bravest patients in the building.
