Indonesia's first nickel battery plant is awake — enough cells each year for 4 million electric vehicles
In Karawang, West Java, the lines have started moving. PT Contemporary Amperex Energy Indonesia — a venture between battery giant CATL and the state-owned Indonesia Battery Corporation — has begun production at the country's first nickel-based electric-vehicle battery plant, with Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita on hand for the start. The first phase delivers 6.9 gigawatt-hours of cells a year, with about 40 gigawatt-hours planned — roughly enough for 4 million vehicles annually — inside a wider investment of about $6 billion that is meant to add solar generation and battery recycling. Indonesia mines much of the world's nickel; now it is starting to build the batteries too.
