Nearly $2 billion for nature: in Yerevan, the world agrees to hurry

Two weeks of talks in Armenia's capital ended with the Yerevan Pathway — a roadmap to speed up the world's stalled promise to protect nature, with four years left to hit 23 global biodiversity targets. Countries adopted nearly 50 decisions, covering protected areas, forests, wildlife, invasive species and coastal seas, and agreed new rules giving Indigenous Peoples and local communities a permanent seat in shaping global nature policy. Nearly $2 billion in new funding was announced, including $560 million through the Global Environment Facility and $500 million for species recovery. 'Differences can be bridged, commitments can become decisions and cooperation can deliver,' said conference president Hambardzum Matevosyan.

The upbeat factornearly 200 countries, two weeks, one shared conclusion — nature cannot wait, and the money moved.
