Nearly a year longer: an immunotherapy pairing is extending lives in advanced womb cancer
For women whose womb (endometrial) cancer has spread or come back, chemotherapy alone has long been the ceiling. Updated results from the global Phase 3 DUO-E trial, presented at the ESMO congress on October 24 by MD Anderson's Shannon Westin, show that durvalumab immunotherapy plus chemotherapy, followed by durvalumab with the targeted drug olaparib, gave a median survival of 51.1 months — 11.5 months longer than chemotherapy alone. The benefit was especially notable in the most common tumour type, which has traditionally had the fewest effective options. No new safety concerns appeared. 'Combining immunotherapy with a PARP inhibitor can deliver durable survival benefits,' Westin said.
