One AI module for every degree: East Africa's ministers adopt a shared plan for university teaching

Ministers from the East African Community have adopted a regional artificial intelligence strategy and approved a shared university AI learning module — a course designed for students in technical and non-technical subjects alike, teaching practical AI use and how to judge AI-generated material critically. The decisions came at a sectoral council meeting in Kampala, Uganda, from 27 to 31 October. Member states were directed to consider introducing the module across degree programmes, the Inter-University Council for East Africa will prepare the rollout framework, and the bloc also approved a regional university AI network and work on AI certification benchmarks for Kiswahili — building the region's own yardsticks, in its own language.

The upbeat factorseven countries, one classroom — and the benchmarks written in Kiswahili, not just imported.
