R136.5 million (about $8.2 million) of upgrades for the elephants of Addo

Addo Elephant National Park in South Africa is getting a R136.5 million (about $8.2 million) investment in the unglamorous things that make conservation work: eight new family accommodation units already open, upgraded water, sewer and electrical systems, refurbished guest facilities, and a new 10-unit community lodge due by December — with a 705-kilowatt solar plant to be commissioned in January 2027. Environment Minister David Maynier, visiting on October 19, said the scale of work underway will bring the park up to international standards in time for the December holidays, supporting both the elephants' home and the local jobs tourism brings.

The upbeat factorpipes, power and a solar plant — the backbone that keeps a great park, and its community, thriving.
