Seven women-led startups in Kenya just shared $70,000 — and their ideas run from mushrooms to sign-language learning

Seven Kenyan startups led by women have each received KES 1.29 million (about $10,000) in grants — KES 9 million (about $70,000) in total — after graduating from the Women in Tech Kenya accelerator, backed by the Standard Chartered Foundation, Village Capital and Strathmore University's @iBizAfrica. The founders work on problems close to home: Premac Care sends trained carers into homes for newborns and elderly patients; Uptyke builds digital learning for deaf learners using sign language and audio; Seta Farm grows mushrooms from organic waste; Trident Analytics helps fish farmers monitor their ponds. Fifteen women completed the 12-week programme; seven leave with capital to test, widen and hire.

The upbeat factorsmall grants, serious founders — seven businesses built by Kenyan women, aimed squarely at their own communities' needs.
