She shoots with her feet, he shoots after losing a leg — together they broke a world record and won gold
Sheetal Devi was born without arms, so she shoots a compound bow with her feet and legs, drawing the string with her shoulder and jaw. Toman Kumar, a former commando who lost a leg, is the men's world No. 1. At the Asian Para Games in Japan, the two Indian world champions first combined for 1,402 points in qualifying — a new world record, two points past the old mark — with Sheetal's 704 out of 720 equalling the individual world record. Then, in Thursday's mixed team final in Okazaki, they held off Indonesia 151–148 to win India's first archery gold of the Games. It is Sheetal's second medal of the week, after silver in the women's doubles.
The upbeat factora world record and a gold medal from two archers who rebuilt the sport around their own bodies.
