'Since we arrived, our health has improved': one small clinic, 8,330 consultations, a community healing

Fatima reached Chemedi, in South Sudan's Upper Nile State, with her family and almost nothing — and found a clinic that could help. The Chemedi Primary Health Care Centre, kept open by UNHCR with funding from the South Sudan Humanitarian Fund alongside Relief International and the Renk County Health Department, provided 8,330 primary health care consultations between July and September 2026 for the roughly 34,000 people now living around Chemedi. The funding paid clinical officers and nurses, stocked the shelves with medicines, upgraded the building and supplied clean water and infection-prevention materials, while community health workers go door to door — and tree to tree — finding the sick who might otherwise miss out. 'The treatment we are getting right now really helped,' Fatima said. 'We do not need to look for a doctor elsewhere.'

The upbeat factora paid nurse, a stocked shelf, a clinic half an hour's walk away — care, close to home, for 34,000 people.
