Singapore aims for 4 gigawatts of sunshine — and five times the battery to keep it

Singapore keeps raising its own bar. The Energy Market Authority announced on Monday that the city-state now targets 4 gigawatts-peak of solar capacity by 2035 — up from 2.3 today, and building on a 2030 goal that was itself raised from 2 to 3 gigawatts-peak after earlier targets were hit ahead of schedule. Storage is scaling with it: from about 350 megawatt-hours today to just over 1 gigawatt-hour by 2030, anchored by a single Jurong Island battery holding 326 megawatt-hours. Up to S$5.3 billion (about $4.1 billion) of grid investment is projected for 2025–2029 as panels spread across reservoirs, vacant land and rooftops, against peak demand that hit 8.6 gigawatts in August and could reach 13 by 2031. Proposals from the storage industry are open until 29 January 2027.

The upbeat factoran island with barely any land keeps finding room for sunshine — on its reservoirs, its rooftops and its future.
