Solar led the charge: 2.6 gigawatts of Australian clean energy reached the money milestone in six months
Getting a clean-energy project financed — 'financial close', in the industry's plainest milestone — is the moment a plan becomes a build. Australia's Clean Energy Council reports 12 projects totalling 2.6 gigawatts reached that point in the first half of 2026, and 11 of the 12 were solar or solar hybrids. The biggest is the 690 MW Turner River Solar Hub in the Pilbara, already under construction for 2028, alongside a 440 MW solar project at Solomon Airport. Five projects totalling 1.4 gigawatts and more than AU$2.8 billion (about $1.8 billion) were switched on in the same half, led by the first 756 MW stage of the Golden Plains Wind Farm in Victoria. Batteries outran themselves: nine projects storing 2.3 gigawatts were commissioned in six months, already more than all of 2025. And on rooftops, 180,878 households and businesses added 1,894 MW of solar — enough that rooftop panels supplied 12.9% of the country's electricity. The energy transition, in Australia, is increasingly a construction statistic.
