Solar panels on 183 roofs, savings shared by 495 homes: the Kimberley communities splitting the sunshine

In the Kimberley, in far northern Western Australia, sunshine falling on one roof now lowers the power bill on the next street. Through the Kimberley Communities Solar Saver program, Horizon Power put about 1.5 megawatts of rooftop solar on 183 homes across six remote communities — Mowanjum, Warmun, Bidyadanga, Ardyaloon, Yungngora and Beagle Bay — and shares the credits with 495 households in all, 62 more than first planned. The shared credits have added up to about 275,000 Australian dollars (about $194,000), and in the longest-running communities households have saved about AU$943 (about $665) each since the program began. The panels have also displaced about 122,000 litres (32,200 gallons) of diesel, cutting diesel use in these communities by roughly 7%.

The upbeat factorthe panels sit on 183 roofs, but the savings belong to the whole community — solar designed to be shared, not fenced.
