Solar power is coming to Kenya's rural schools, clinics and water pumps

For a school, a clinic or a water pump far from Kenya's national power grid, electricity can be the difference between coping and thriving. On Tuesday in Nairobi, Kenya signed an agreement with China to install off-grid solar systems in remote rural areas — including Tana River, Kilifi County and the area around Maasai Mara University — under the Africa Solar Belt initiative, first announced at the Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi in 2023. The panels are meant to power schools and health facilities and to keep water systems running in places where extending the grid is hardest. Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira signed for Kenya, with UNICEF's country representative Dr Shaheen Nilofer witnessing the signing.

The upbeat factorwhere the grid cannot reach, sunlight will — for lessons, check-ups and clean water alike.
