Sunshine by day, stored sunshine by night: Portugal's first big hybrid solar plants are now running
In northern Portugal, the sun now keeps working after it sets. Sonnedix has switched on commercial operations at its first large hybrid solar-and-battery plants — Acail, with 28.3 MWp of solar panels and 60.2 MWh of batteries, and Felgueiras, with 39.9 MWp and 80.3 MWh. Together they add about 68.2 MWp of solar power and 140.5 MWh of storage, with batteries that can release about 56 MW when homes need power most. The batteries charge from the panels or from the grid, smoothing out the oldest problem with solar power: the best sunshine hours and the busiest evening hours are not the same hours.
The upbeat factortwo Portuguese plants now bottle the daytime sun and pour it back out after dark.
