The first minutes after birth: Bauchi health workers retrain for the emergency that decides everything

When bleeding after childbirth turns dangerous, it turns fast — and the person standing closest matters most. In Bauchi, Nigeria, frontline health workers have completed a three-day refresher course, backed by UNICEF and Global Affairs Canada, on preventing and treating postpartum haemorrhage, a leading cause of mothers' deaths. Led by obstetrician Dr Emmanuel Agbogo, the training follows the WHO's recommended first-response steps: spot the bleeding early, act in a set sequence, and do not wait. UNICEF health officer Oluseyi Oloshunde said the programme will extend to more facilities across the state's local government areas, so the skill lives where mothers actually deliver.

The upbeat factora mother surviving childbirth can come down to training — and that training is spreading, facility by facility.
