The hedgehog won the vote — it will appear on Britain's next banknotes
Britain voted, and the hedgehog won by a landslide. The Bank of England's next series of banknotes will feature the European hedgehog as a central image, after a public consultation drew nearly 500,000 responses and the hedgehog emerged as the most popular mammal with 259,655 votes. It will be joined by the Atlantic puffin, the barn owl and the buff-tailed bumblebee in a new wildlife series. Sussex wildlife rescuers welcomed the decision as a chance to celebrate and protect a species whose rural populations have fallen sharply since 2000 — and to remind gardeners to leave 'hedgehog highways' so the animals can roam safely between gardens.
The upbeat factor259,655 votes for the hedgehog — Britain's favourite mammal, soon in every wallet.
