The last turbine is up: Ecowende will power 3% of the Netherlands
Out in the North Sea, the Ecowende offshore wind farm is complete in the way that matters most: its final turbine has been installed, closing a year-long installation campaign by Van Oord's vessel Boreas. The farm's roughly 760 megawatts will generate enough renewable electricity for about 3% of the Netherlands' current electricity demand, and its first power already flowed in July. Ecowende was designed with an extra ambition — to build offshore wind in a way that teaches the industry how to leave the sea healthier, with ecological innovations woven into the project that future farms can copy.
The upbeat factorone wind farm, three percent of a nation's electricity — and a rulebook for building the next ones kinder to the sea.
