The park that began with 11 elephants is getting R136.5 million (about $8.2 million) of new life

Addo Elephant National Park in South Africa's Eastern Cape was proclaimed in 1931 to protect the last 11 Addo elephants. This month SANParks confirmed a R136.5 million (about $8.2 million) upgrade programme is well under way: eight modern family accommodation units are finished and open, a new spa is operating, and bulk sewer and electrical works are complete. More refurbished units, a guest house and a swimming pool follow in December, with roads, ablution facilities and hiking trails next in line. The investment keeps a near-century-old conservation success story welcoming the visitors whose fees help protect it.

The upbeat factora park saved for 11 elephants, still growing — and still paying for its own protection.
